Settlement Details

The parish is made up of 6 settlements, Ivinghoe, Ivinghoe Aston, Horton Wharf Ford End, Great Gap and Ringshall.

 

Ivinghoe

Formerly a town, the village of Ivinghoe sits at the foot of the Chiltern Hills (an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty). Parts of Ivinghoe are also within a conservation area including some of our well-kept allotments.

Dividing Ivinghoe and Pitstone is Whistle Brook, a stream that runs through the village and once provided mechanical power. Surviving historic building includes St Marys Church, The Town Hall, and the former village school, which today is a community hub and cafe. Other village amenities include a shop, library (community run), hairdressers, pharmacy, The Rose and Crown Pub and The Kings Head restaurant.

Due to the beauty of the area, there is now a campsite at Town Farm that attracts a vast number of visitors.

 

Ford End

Previously a ford, this settlement consists of 9 houses 3 of which are farms including a farm shop and butchers. It’s most historic feature is the watermill, which still works today and is open to the public on certain days throughout the year.

 

Great Gap

Great Gap is a linear hamlet consisting of 12 houses built on one side of the B488. Its houses are of a range of styles and age, with the most recent being built in 2015. Previously Great Gap had The Raven Pub, which is now a private home.  The entrance to Grove Farm Pick You Own now also sits within Great Gap

 

Ivinghoe Aston

Ivinghoe Aston is a linear village with a number of its houses set back from the road. Over the years the village sadly lost its school, chapel and post office, which are all now unique private homes. The village has also lost its Village Hall which is now in private ownership. However the village still has its pub, saved from conversion and now owned by a number of local residents.

 

Horton Wharf

Surrounded by farm land, Horton Wharf is based on the edge of the Grand Union Canal between Ivinghoe Aston and Slapton. At present there are only two houses within this settlement due to the vast amount of farmed agricultural land.

 

Ringshall

Surrounded by National Trust land, Ringshall sits in an area of outstanding natural beauty.

Only part of Ringshall is in our parish due to the village being split between two counties.
