BHB Project - FAQ's

General

1. What is the Ben Hamilton Baillee Project

The Ben Hamilton Baillee Project is a road safety scheme intiated seperately by both Ivinghoe Parish Council and Pitstone Parish Council. A survey was completed in 2015 by Ben Hamilton Baillee Associates of what improvements could be made to the two villages to enhance road safety for all road users, pedestrians and motorists alike.

In Ivinghoe potential schemes were highlighted as follows

  • rerouting B489 traffic between Dunstable and Aylesbury away from the villages along Tring Road, Ivinghoe and Westfield Road, Pitstone, with junction modifications at the corner of Dunstable Road and Tring Road
  • creating a shared space outside the Kings Head and church
  • creating an informal crossing between the Lawn and Town Hall
  • introducing safety features outside Brookmead School
  • introducing safety features along Station Road at the junctions with Ladysmith Road and Maud Janes Close
  • introducing safety features at te entrance to Great Gap

2. What is the Ivinghoe and Pitsone Safety Scheme

When Ivinghoe and Pitstone parish councils put the Ben Hamilton Baillee proposals to the then Buckinghamshire County Council Highways Department it was agreed by all parties that both projects should be run as one, called the Ivinghoe and Pitstone Safety Scheme. Although a single project from Buckinghamshire Council's point of view, each part of the project that is specific to a village would be funded by that village, i.e. if any part is wholly within Ivinghoe, then Ivinghoe Parish Council would seek the funding for that part of the project.

Phase 1 - Station Road / Maud Janes Close / Ladysmith Road

1. What is the Station Road part of the scheme

This is to provide safety features at the junctions of Maud Janes Close and Ladysmith Road designed to slow the traffic in both directions and provide a safe crossing point within the safety zone.

2. Would it not be better to provide the additional parking on a section of the Lawn

The simple answer is we are not allowed.

When the land, known as the Lawn, was granted to the parish of Ivinghoe there were a number of covenants attached to that grant. The one that affects parking is that we can only park vehicles on the Lawn on a limited number of days per year, with priority given to village events, local fair, and church events.

Failure to adhere to the covenant would mean the loss of the Lawn to the village of Ivinghoe.

3. What is the consultation of January 2022 about.

This consultation is not about the whole scheme, or for that matter, the whole of the Station Road, phase 1 scheme. This consultation is all about potential parking restrictions in the bays as indicated on the phase 1 diagram.

Ivinghoe Parish Council have other parking schemes within the village of Ivinghoe being considered and from the point of view of the Traffic Regulation Order, it is better use of resources and funds to combine all the traffic orders into one.
